The Great Gatsby (2000): A Review and Analysis

The Great Gatsby is a 2000 American-British television film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel of the same name. It was directed by Robert Markowitz and stars Toby Stephens, Mira Sorvino, Paul Rudd and Martin Donovan. The film follows the story of Nick Carraway, a young bond salesman who moves to Long Island and becomes fascinated by his mysterious neighbor Jay Gatsby, a self-made millionaire who throws lavish parties and harbors a secret love for Nick’s cousin Daisy Buchanan.

The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised the performances of the cast, especially Stephens and Sorvino, but criticized the script, direction and production values. Some critics also felt that the film failed to capture the essence and spirit of Fitzgerald’s novel, which is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of American literature. The film was also compared unfavorably to the 1974 version starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, which is considered by many to be the definitive adaptation of the novel.

In this blog post, I will discuss some of the strengths and weaknesses of the 2000 film version of The Great Gatsby, and how it compares to the original novel and the 1974 film. I will also explore some of the themes and motifs that Fitzgerald used in his novel, such as the American dream, social class, love and betrayal, and how they are portrayed in the film. I hope to provide a balanced and insightful analysis of this film adaptation, and to spark some interest and debate among fans of Fitzgerald’s masterpiece.

One of the strengths of the 2000 film is the casting of Toby Stephens as Jay Gatsby. Stephens delivers a nuanced and charismatic performance that captures Gatsby’s charm, ambition, vulnerability and obsession. He portrays Gatsby as a complex and tragic figure who is driven by his idealized vision of Daisy and his desire to recreate the past. Stephens also conveys Gatsby’s inner conflict between his true identity as James Gatz, a poor farmer’s son from North Dakota, and his fabricated persona as Jay Gatsby, a wealthy and influential socialite from West Egg.

Another strength of the film is Mira Sorvino’s portrayal of Daisy Buchanan. Sorvino brings out Daisy’s beauty, grace, innocence and fragility, as well as her selfishness, superficiality and carelessness. She shows how Daisy is torn between her love for Gatsby and her loyalty to her husband Tom Buchanan, a brutish and unfaithful aristocrat from East Egg. Sorvino also reveals Daisy’s disillusionment with her life of luxury and privilege, and her longing for something more meaningful and authentic.

However, the film also has some weaknesses that prevent it from being a faithful and effective adaptation of Fitzgerald’s novel. One of the weaknesses is the script, which deviates from the novel in several ways. For example, the film omits some important scenes from the novel, such as Nick’s visit to Tom and Myrtle’s apartment in New York, where he witnesses their violent quarrel; Gatsby’s funeral, where only Nick, Owl Eyes and Gatsby’s father attend; and Nick’s encounter with Jordan Baker at the end of the story, where he breaks off their relationship. The film also adds some scenes that are not in the novel, such as Nick’s flashback to his childhood in Minnesota; Daisy’s visit to Gatsby’s mansion before their reunion at Nick’s house; and Nick’s confrontation with Tom after Gatsby’s death.

Another weakness of the film is the direction, which lacks subtlety and sophistication. The film relies too much on voice-over narration by Nick Carraway, which reduces the impact of the dialogue and the visual imagery. The film also uses excessive flashbacks to show Gatsby’s past, which disrupts the narrative flow and creates confusion for the viewers. The film also fails to create a convincing sense of time and place for the story, which is set in 1922 during the Jazz Age. The film does not capture the atmosphere and mood of the era, such as its glamour, decadence, hedonism and corruption.

The film also suffers from poor production values, which make it look cheap and dated. The film does not have enough budget to create realistic sets and costumes for the characters and locations. The film also uses low-quality special effects for some scenes, such as Gatsby’s car crash and Daisy’s hit-and-run accident. The film also has a mediocre soundtrack that does not match the style and tone of the story.

The 2000 film version of The Great Gatsby is an interesting but flawed attempt to adapt Fitzgerald’s novel to the screen. It has some merits in terms of its cast and their performances, but it also has many drawbacks in terms of its script, direction and production values. It does not do justice to Fitzgerald’s novel, which is a masterpiece of American literature that explores themes such as the American dream, social class, love and betrayal. The film also does not compare well to the 1974 film version, which is more faithful and elegant in its adaptation of the novel.
