Weet jy wat groen-oë mense so onweerstaanbaar maak? Dit is nie net hul eksotiese en geheimsinnige voorkoms nie, maar ook hul natuurlike neiging om na mekaar aangetrek te word. Ek woon in ‘n klein woonstelgebou saam met ‘n paar ander huurders, van wie een ‘n aantreklike Noord-Afrikaanse man is wat onder my woon. Hy het die wonderlikste groen oë wat ek nog ooit gesien het, en ek kan nie anders as om ‘n vonk te voel elke keer as ek hom sien nie. Hy is ook baie skoon en netjies, anders as sy sub-verhuurder wat vroeër ‘n gemors gelaat het. Ek het eendag gesien hoe hy ‘n bottel skoonmaakmiddel dra met ‘n lelie-van-die-vallei-geur, wat toevallig my gunsteling is. Ek het dit geneem as ‘n teken dat ons bedoel was om te wees.
Maar daar is ‘n probleem. Ek het reeds ‘n kat, en hy het ook een. En hulle haat mekaar. Hulle is natuurlik albei groen oë en tree op soos jaloerse mededingers wanneer hulle mekaar sien. Hulle sis, krap en jaag mekaar om die gebou, wat verwoesting en ergernis vir almal veroorsaak. Dit is asof hulle weet dat ons aangetrokke is tot mekaar, en hulle wil ons verhouding saboteer.
Hoe kan ek hierdie struikelblok oorkom en nader aan my groenoog-buurman kom? Hoe kan ek ons katte laat oor die weg kom en ophou baklei? Is daar ‘n manier om hulle te laat sien dat ons almal deel is van dieselfde groen-oog familie? Of is ek gedoem om in ‘n ewige toestand van frustrasie en verlange te leef?
