This is a report about the online dating survey of U.S. adults conducted Oct. 16-28, 2019, that reveiled “The Virtues and Downsides of Online Dating”

Online dating has become a popular way for people to find love and romance, but it also comes with some challenges and risks. According to an online dating survey of U.S. adults conducted by Pew Research Center from Oct. 16-28, 2019, 30% of Americans have used an online dating site or app, and 12% have married or been in a committed relationship with someone they met through online dating.

The online dating survey also revealed some of its benefits and drawbacks, based on the experiences and opinions of the respondents. Here are some of the main findings:

  • Online dating can expand the pool of potential partners and help people find someone who shares their interests, values and goals. 49% of online daters said they had a very or somewhat positive experience with online dating, and 22% said they found a long-term partner or spouse through it.
  • Online dating can also expose people to harassment, deception and other negative behaviors. 45% of online daters said they had a very or somewhat negative experience with online dating, and 28% said they felt harassed or uncomfortable by someone they met online. Moreover, 54% of online daters said they encountered someone who was not truthful about themselves, and 19% said they were sent unsolicited explicit messages or images.
  • Online dating can vary by age, gender, race, education and sexual orientation. Younger adults, women, black adults, college graduates and LGBTQ+ adults were more likely to use online dating than their counterparts. They were also more likely to report positive outcomes and negative experiences with online dating. For example, 48% of women aged 18 to 34 said they found a long-term partner or spouse through online dating, compared to 31% of men in the same age group. However, 57% of women in that age group also said they felt harassed or uncomfortable by someone they met online, compared to 37% of men.
  • Online dating can reflect and influence the broader social and cultural trends in the U.S. The survey showed that online daters were more likely to have liberal views on social issues, such as interracial marriage, same-sex marriage and abortion. They were also more likely to say that it is harder for men to know how to behave on dates in the era of #MeToo movement. Furthermore, online daters were more likely to use social media and smartphones to communicate with their partners, and to say that these technologies have a positive impact on their relationships.

Conclusion of the Online dating survey out of 2019

Online dating is a complex phenomenon that offers both opportunities and challenges for people who are looking for love and connection in the digital age. The survey results provide a snapshot of how Americans perceive and experience online dating today, but they also raise new questions and issues for future research and policy.
